Trending Tuesday: TURMERIC TONIC

Hi Friends! I love being a part of the beautiful health and wellness community in Southern California. In LA there are always innovative new workout classes to take on and tasty new nutritious food joints to try! PLUS the like-minded people that I meet always seem to be in the know when it comes to health and wellness trends. For this reason I decided to launch a new weekly blog piece. On Trending Tuesday’s I’ll introduce one of the buzzed-about new trends (good or bad) and we can take a look at the pro and/or cons together. Let’s start with a current favorite of mine TURMERIC!

Turmeric is a potent spice that seems to be popping up everywhere lately—and with good reason. This powerful herb packs a serious punch of flavor, color and health benefits! You probably recognize turmeric as the vibrant golden spice that colors Indian food, but it really has so much more to offer. Turmeric fights inflammation, reduces risks for brain and heart disease and can ward off cancer, Alzheimer’s and depression. Turmeric is definitely a trend that I support – it is natural, easy to incorporate into your diet and holistic. I swear by a nightly bedtime turmeric tonic.

My Malaysian friend, Wen, introduced me to this amazing elixir recipe last year while we were filming Fit 4 Fashion. Master the simple recipe and sip on this tea nightly as you wind down and prepare for bed.

Turmeric Tonic

Ingredients:

1 lemon

1 cup of water
½ – 1 inch of peeled, chopped turmeric

½ – 1 inch of peeled, chopped ginger

Pinch of black pepper (the pepper helps your body to absorb the turmeric)

Cut and juice the lemon. Add the lemon and its juice to a small pot along with the water, turmeric, ginger and pepper. Bring to a boil, then reduce to simmer for ten minutes. Strain into an old mug*, allow to cool slightly and enjoy!

*CAUTION Turmeric will dye everything it comes in contact with a deep shade of yellow! By everything, I mean EVERYTHING. That being said — use an old mug and maybe even wear some gloves during prep time if you’re not interested in an all-natural nail polish!

Enjoy the tea and let me know how you incorporate turmeric into your diet. Be well!
