5 top tips — How to eat right while traveling

I am not the girl who can stick to a super strict diet while traveling. For me food is part of the fun — especially in Greece. Many readers have asked me to share my tips on how to indulge on vacation without gaining 20 pound. Here are my top 5 tips.

5 top tips — How to eat right while traveling

1. Become a master taster. Traveling is a learning experience and you are going to want to try delicacies from the places you visit. Do it! Don’t miss the opportunity. Sample everything if you want to. But keep your tastes tiny and dissect each little bite with your tastebuds —  fully experience every flavor and texture. Go for quality tastes, not quantity.

2. When you’re home and an exciting event comes up it’s easy to throw your healthy eating philosophy out the window for the night (cheat day!) but if you’re on vacation every meal can feel like a special occasion! Remind yourself that traveling is a marathon, not a sprint. You don’t need to drink alcohol at breakfast, lunch and dinner. It’s ok to skip a dessert here and there. At the end of the day food is fuel and the material that makes up your cells. Break that mentality that you need to indulge to truly enjoy.

3. Consider your needs as well as your wants. Listen to your body. For instance, when I am traveling in Europe lunch usually becomes a big, leisurely meal that drifts into the late afternoon. When it’s time for dinner, I need to check in with my hunger. Do I need a full meal right now or would I be better of splitting something or sticking to a light salad?

4. Remember there is always another opportunity to eat right around the corner. This is a great tip for times when the amount of food is excessive (ie. buffets and family style meals). Watch your plate fill up and be aware of how much you are actually getting ready to eat. Maybe pick up a little less than you think you might like to have and stop. There’s nothing wrong with getting hungry before your next meal. It will actually make the experience more exciting.

5. Travel with your staples. Sometimes we travel into situations where the temptation of amazing food never ends, but there are times when we find ourselves in the opposite situation — tired, famished and finding our way. I always prepare for the later situation by packing Champion Naturals vegan protein powders. These are my favorite staple meals at home because I know they are going to fill me up with the complete nutrients that I may lack and keep me balanced, full of energy and properly fueled.
